1. Simplify. Declutter. Get rid of it. Sell, donate, toss it, WHATEVER! Trust me…
you will feel SO much better and be much happier once you do.
2. Bring the Outdoors in. Whether it’s Greenery from your front yard (or even your neighbors he he), Succulents, Indoor plants, Herbs, dried/Natural wreaths, twigs.. use it! It really adds a lot of warmth & character to a room and it can even improve the air quality in your home!

Here are a few examples:
3. Bring the indoors out. Don’t just stop when you reach the doorway! The outside of your home should always feel like a continuation of the inside. Fix up that neglected front porch/patio/deck of yours. Add some nice seating, a farmhouse table, candles, lots of pillows, etc. Make it a warm & inviting place you WANT to enjoy..not avoid! it’s the easiest way to feel like you’ve doubled the square footage of your home without having to spend thousands.
4. Architectural salvage. Use pieces like old windows, doors, corbels, shutters, etc. in unexpected ways! hang them on the wall, make a faux fireplace mantle, replace your builder grade doors…there’s just so much you can do. One of my favorite Architectural pieces from Joanna’s farmhouse is her kitchen island! It literally makes my heart skip a beat!
5. Go neutral. It’s definitely not for everyone, but in almost every design that Joanna does, she uses mainly neutral colors like whites, greys, beiges, etc. with pops of other colors like red, teal, aqua, yellow. It is so much easier to change out your throw pillows to add color to your room rather than painting your walls bright red..only to realize you are tired of it after a few months. Like I said, it’s not for everyone. that’s the joy of being able to decorate your home the way YOU like it…if you want COLOR, go for it! Here are some colors that have been used on the show & are pretty much no fail colors!
6. Incorporating Antique/Vintage/Industrial with new. It is the easiest way to add instant charm to a room & The key to Joanna’s sought after “Modern Farmhouse” look. Add modern/industrial floating shelves to display beautiful vintage dishes, or swap out your plain jane bathroom vanity for an antique vanity or dresser to add personality! The possibilities are endless.
